Oral Microbiome of Smokeless Tobacco-Consumers

Oral Microbiome of Smokeless Tobacco-Consumers

We carried out a 16S-based oral microbiome analysis of samples from three different sites of healthy and oral cancer patients from the Indian cohort. This study assessed the effect of tobacco consumption in altering the oral microbiome. We reported a significant similarity between the oral microbial profile of smokeless tobacco-consuming healthy individuals and oral cancer samples, indicating the possible role of smokeless tobacco consumption in increasing oral inflammation-associated microbial taxa. The study was published in Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology in 2022.
